Week of 20260524 - Young Single Adult Conference Outlined; Cutting Table; Leadership Speech; Trips to Goodwill; Shed Unburdened; House Inspected; Wetumpka Chapel Cleaning; Lipoma; Selma and Shelley

= Sunday, we were at church. A pre-teen, explaining that children who die before they are old enough to understand right from wrong go into the Celestial Kingdom without baptism, compared it to attractions where kids don't have to pay but adults do. The person who leads music in Primary pointed out that by letting us exercise our faith every day through action, the Lord allows us to participate in our own transformation. A member of the Bishop who's departing soon related how God had prepared him for his time here. (Example: he served a mission in South Korea; when he was called to the Bishopric, he had an active role in helping our Korean members here.)
= We interacted with the Young Single Adult Conference Committee; they've made great progress.

= Monday was a holiday. From storage, I brought shelves that wound up in the craft room. We brought the serger cart and positioned the sewing table (wood over shelves) in the sewing room. Steph continued to review a speech for tomorrow. When she wasn't certain it would be ready, I started a talk of my own.

= Tuesday, Steph was ready; I set aside my talk for another day. She did a great job; the project was to explore her management style. She gives people leeway to do things their way, but if they’re not stepping up, she tends to step in. At every meeting, she takes notes by habit, preparing herself to lead.
= After lunch and changing into work clothes, we helped a friend move things to Goodwill.

= Wednesday after work, we moved another load to Goodwill, then a load of furniture to our house. The person I had hired to remove tree limbs from around our shed did a great job.

= Thursday, I did the "virtual inspection" our insurance company had been waiting for. Steph did a podcast interview. I repaired a sewing table whose caster I had broken off in the move.

= Friday after work, we looked for something to place under the dishwasher rack I use for a dish drainer. Then we picked up food to donate, folding chairs to sit in, and headed to Wetumpka for a broadcast of the Tabernacle Choir. Only I had the wrong month.
= But we pulled into the parking lot as Ron and Melissa Welch were getting out of their vehicle; they had come to clean the chapel. We pulled out of the parking lot, then drove back in. The timing had been too perfect; we were in Wetumpka for a reason. So, we knocked on the door and helped clean. (We did the glass doorways, then bought Blizzards from the local Dairy Queen. That was our Date Night.)

= Saturday after 1100, Steph left for Selma to spend the day with Shelley Patterson. She would have left sooner, but I had not completely closed her water jug and it drenched the front passenger seat and back seat floor with water and ice.
= I journaled, napped, emailed and journaled, and by 6:15 I left for Walmart, where I returned some items and bought two pizzas. Oops: they didn't fit in the refrigerator. I hope the chest freezer won't ruin them.

This lady jumped out of her vehicle to provide something to the person in the meridian.

Church

Please be patient, student driver.

[One sign isn't enough? Three?]

At the Wetumpka chapel, people will sit outdoors to watch a broadcast of the Tabernacle Choir and will bring easy-to-prepare shelf-stable meals to donate to the Elmore County Family Resource Center.

June 26/Friday

Steph, taking photos to choose from for "Steph's Sunday Snippets

Pruning plants

Half-pound trumpet-shaped pasta; red sauce with meatballs.

Trumpet-shaped pasta unrolls in your mouth; the sensation is almost like eating lasagna.

Bonsai spraying

Touches the audience doesn't see: a pillow for the legs; a pillow for the left arm.

I pulled these out of storage Monday morning.

Here is what remained (in medium regular storage).

Bringing in small shelves

This sign is a big improvement over the previous version. I guess other people were as confused as I was by the old sign. And this sign has a more-legible phone number.

Here's the old sign, seen last week; the caricature looked like one used by a different business to sell mattresses.

This school, taking shape on the bypass, not far from Atlanta Highway, is going to be huge.

We're going to the storage unit together to bring back the sewing table.

These three bookshelves support a plywood topper that has wood strips to keep the topper (the cutting table) from slipping. I think this Toyota Sienna has a higher inside roof that the Dodge Grand Caravans I've driven in the past.

Don't go to the Jack's across from that school for a milkshake.

Admittedly, the other food from Jack's was good; this is a Conecuh sausage. But make sure you get your entire order before you drive away; we didn't.

I was so focused on U-Haul's representation of Alaska that I didn't notice the drama unfolding until I looked at the photo that night.

Steph wrestled boxes into the closet to clear the floor for the cutting table.

Almost ready

Ready. (Years ago, we cut the plywood and rails to fit exactly over these bookshelves.)

Now for the craft room

..

Darker, but this provides a clearer view of the rolling cart Steph uses for her serger

Dinner is coming

Salmon with vegetables and rice

We watched Don't Miss This (scripture discussion) while we ate.

I put the guest bathroom shower curtain in place and also the matching rug, soap dish, and soap dispenser.

Misting the bonsai

Steph spoke on her leadership style: a Toastmasters project.

Liz Burgess was General Evaluator.

(I led Table Topics; so, I didn't take photos of those participants today.)

Ashley Beacom came to the lectern to demonstrate signals because it's easier for remote participants to see them that way.

Scott Burbank was the evaluator for Steph's project today.

Ken Hairston, reporting on the use of the word of the day and on odd grammar.

Out club reached President's Select status last week. We have done well but won't have enough points (specific educational awards by club members) to achieve President's Distinguished by the annual June deadline.

Chick-fil-A today

You are the best part of today

Serious rain

Proud Parent of a U.S. Army Soldier

We hauled stuff to Goodwill for Cassandra Whitney.

Some boxes were so heavy that I tipped them in from the dolly instead of lifting them from the ground.

..

..

I steamed tiny potatoes in the Instant Pot.

We had them with porkchops and mixed vegetables.

[I made so much that we had the rest for Wednesday dinner: seen here.]

After work, we were back at Sister Whitney's. We made another trip to Goodwill, a different one that was open a little later than the first.

She gave us furniture she wasn't going to take with her.

We had to shift some of our own things already in the van.

Serious wrap. Steph wondered whether some business funded this.

..

{Patches}

We made a rare trip to Aldi's.

Yes, bring a quarter if you go there.

Geese at Eastchase

..

As night fell, someone was pushing a bicycle. (Montgomery roads, in general, are not safe for pedestrians.)

Item added at the last moment, cradled by one of our dollys.

Getting dark by the time we finished unloading

That's steam, not smoke, but I still scorched the inside of this pan heating leftovers from yesterday [and now it's warped].

Hint for the future: heat the meat and vegetables separately so as to not overheat the vegetables.

Now that we've finally switched from being landlords to living in the house ourselves - yes, that was months ago - our insurance company wanted some photos.

This is what the shed looked like last week.

To be useful, clearing these limbs would have to start high up, over the shed but well above it.

And that's what Oscar did. He cleared limbs high up where I could not readily cope with them. Notice two fresh cuts to the left, not just the ones over the shed itself. Nice job!

Here's the new view of the shed.

..

Rhonda, the SUV, had fallen back to having only one warning light: tire pressure.

(The other lights came back on after a few minutes of driving.)

Alba gu bràth {Scotland until judgment [day]} {Scotland forever}

I opened up panels from three sides of the dehumidifier, but I didn't see a way to make it run again; I closed it back up carefully.

Furniture repair: I had broken off the caster while moving this sewing table that will live in the craft room.

I cut some wood, drilled it, and fastened it with screws to make the result stronger than the original.

I much prefer using this big old dishwasher rack to using a standard dish drainer (shown next to it), but I don't have a drainboard big enough for the rack to keep the countertop from being soaked.

Misting dead bonsai

Until we find our kitchen scale, I have to be creative to use half of a container of pasta.

Served with butter, vegetables with riced cauliflower, and these seasonings

Salads for Friday lunch (with salad dressing in separate containers)

Beating a dead horse

I assumed something about this name {MESHUN} but discovered that it's been in the U.S. since at least the 1800s. The more I know, the more I don't know.

This hearse has an "in memory of" tag; so, it's probably owned by an individual, not a business. (And, the back window is missing.)

 Michael's has music

We ate at Full Moon.

We have no idea what kind of three this is, with delicate fern-like leaves and pods almost the size of golf balls.

In Wetumpka, some cow pastures haven't become housing developments yet.

We arrived at the Wetumpka chapel to find its pavilion empty. [I helped build this pavilion long ago.]

We arrived as Ron and Melissa Welch were arriving to clean the chapel. No activities tonight; I had the wrong month. Steph and I decided that since we arrived the same time they did, we were in Wetumpka for a reason; so, we helped clean as part of our Date Night.

..

Young people had a scripture-reading challenge.

This board advertising family search showed connections for a family. The Wetumpka chapel has a formally designated Family History Center and thus special access to some special collections you can't see from home (due to restrictions from the organizations that made then available).

We bought Blizzards from Dairy Queen.

(Yes, the door handle is in the shape of the iconic Dairy Queen spoon.)

Steph drove Rhonda (the SUV) to Selma for the day.
