Week of 20250727 - Ghana Week 72: Elmina Chapel; Stake Devotional; Racist Accusation; Mouse Found; Water Handled; Ghana Non-citizen Card Renewal; Indigenous Slavery; Cooking Lesson Moved; Power Outage

= Sunday, the truck balked long enough (loose battery connection) to keep us from being able to take the Sacrament in Mfuom. By the time we accepted that fact and turned around, we would not be in time to take it anywhere unless we waited until an 1100 start. We had a medication delivery to make to Elmina. So, we went to the Elmina chapel, took in the tail end of the Sacrament meeting, and attended the meetings that followed: Elders Quorum for me, Relief Society for Steph. All handled very well.
= After a nap at home, we went to a Stake Devotional at which the Tachie-Mensons were featured speakers. Many of the people who had formed President Tachie-Menson's life were there, and I enjoyed the talks. The Stake President said of the approved ways to grow the church, one was to have more babies [grin]; the other was to do missionary work. He related that this is the fastest-growing church in the world. 144 people were baptized in one day in Cameroon.
= Missionaries called during the session; Steph had to deal with their medical issues. One of the missionaries accused Steph of being racist because she sent a white missionary to the doctor but didn't send him. This kid refused to give symptoms, only repeating that he wanted a doctor and if he couldn’t get one, he wanted to go home. We later realized he was comparing his situation (likely allergies) to that of a missionary who had a heart arrhythmia that needed to be looked into.

= Monday, Steph found the mouse I had lost; it was in an outer mesh pouch of her computer bag where I had accidentally placed it days ago! I worked on missionaries in bicycle areas and finished posting which medical facilities in the central region have submitted bills to national health insurance (and so are likely still active). Home, I paired issues identified by missionaries with their apartments. (Not trivial; they don't use the "official" apartment names, and some of the missionaries had moved by the time I received this information.) Steph ran out of data; this restricted our movements for the balance of the month so she would be near WiFi.

= Tuesday, I set up automatic payment for the water bill back in the States, a new account being necessary when the renter left; a tax refund, after tithing, will cover most of the repairs to the house. Meals. Journal.

= Wednesday, the mission had Ghana Non-Citizen Card registration just for us, at the Ola chapel. This saved us two days of driving back and forth and having to provide temporary missionary companions for the ones left behind in Cape Coast: a great blessing.
= Home, I was 3/4 of the way through "A History of Indigenous Slavery in Ghana". Slavery was tightly woven into Ghanaian society but was different in many aspects from what Westerners perceive (not great, just different). Reading this helps me infer likely impacts of slavery in other places and times where it existed and likely still exists. [sigh]

= Thursday, we stayed home. The mission van had tire problems two hours north of Cape Coast. Blessedly, it made it back, and two tires were replaced. In the evening, missionaries called, having run out of power. I had shown them how to check their balance earlier this month, but they had not. They were stuck until tomorrow when they could buy more. (At least this didn't happen on a weekend.)

= Friday, we were at the office before 1100. When I picked up leftovers from the house for lunch, I drove to buy bread but discovered we had spent so much recently that I didn't have enough to do it. [sheepish grin] Taking what I thought was a short cut back to the office but wasn't, I passed a Hindu monastery!
= At the meeting, Steph delivered a spiritual thought that focused on being made whole before you are made physically whole. She cited a conference talk but used the example of David Clark, who when stricken with a neuromuscular disease, pushed through his sorrow and frustration and became a best-selling author. His personal triumphs inspire me. I knew him. I knew his father.
= Pizza Hut past 8. Contemplation of food storage for the mission. Star Trek - Next Generation. Cleaned kitchen for tomorrow. We relaxed.

= Saturday. No power. Sister Rebecca's cooking class (for a hibiscus beverage "sobolo" and a soft plantain dish) moved to Sister Dimmick's. I hung out at the office (which had power) until this was done. When we returned, Steph opened the windows. I napped until almost 5. As I got up the power came back on. I blogged, then researched food storage length until almost 0030.

People have used this old political poster - general elections were nine months ago - to hold death notices.

These traffic humps near the N1 intersection at Ola have been reinforced with metal plates, making them bounce the vehicle abruptly even if its moving at a crawl.

And businesses have taken steps to avoid being an easy way to get around them.

The area near the breakwater as we move from Cape Coast to Elmina is hazy today.

The hotel name is eye-catching, but the hotel is being added to, and there's a FOREX (Foreign Exchange) Bureau downtown with the same name.

My brother, John, a designer and builder of spiral staircases, might get a kick out of this one.

Most water towers we have seen here are truncated cubes; this one is an exception.

On our road for us to ease past, a caution against speaking for God without authority

"Jesus I know"..

Acts 19:13-16 - Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

I'm guessing that the barrels say New Life.

Lunch is served after Ghana Non-citizen card renewal at Ola, the first time we haven't had to drive to Takoradi for this! It replaced multiple trips with a single, local, session and went very smoothly.

My attempt at Swedish Pancakes. The idea was to have something similar to crepes that you then roll jelly into.

The range-top pan support is not level; I can bend it, but the fix is only temporary.

Can you identify these ingredients?

Water, over high flame. A half can of fake spam, shredded; a small amount of carrot, shredded; garlic and onion powder; frying on low heat. A can of mixed vegetables that I opened yesterday but didn’t use; perhaps two tablespoons of margarine; added to the frying pan. Perhaps a half cup of red cabbage from a jar; a quarter cup of pineapple jelly; a splash (maybe three tablespoons) of balsamic vinegar; added to the frying pan. When the water started boiling, one pack of the regular powdered seasoning from a family-size pack of ramen; three family-size packs of ramen; two minutes; drain. Add and mix in the contents of the frying pan and serve. Three family packs was a larger amount than we needed, but making only two family packs of ramen would have let the sauce overpower it. It was so good that Steph went for seconds before she finished firsts.

Across from the Audit agency, columns are being added

Reinforcement has been added to the traffic bumps near N1 and the turn for the mission compound: jarring at a crawl.

With the building being built in sections, I find it interesting that the top floor stairwell has been completely enclosed.

Abraham had taken the knife to slay his son as God had commanded him. Then the Angel of the LORD restrained him. Genesis 22:13-14 - And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

I don't think I had noticed this laboratory before, north on Jukwa Road not far from the market near Pedu Junction. (The second floor claims to host a rural branch bank.)

We were in this area to buy pineapples for a cooking class.

I hope he sells something today.

Vehicles easing over the newly reinforced traffic bumps, like the oh no bird coming in for a landing or pulling a Band-Aid off slowly.

When we returned, we found no power on our street; we surmise that things were being bulked up to handle the new building across from the Audit agency. When Sister Dimmick arrived with Sister Rebecca, they picked up Steph and brought her to the Dimmicks. I followed not long afterward to use the Internet (and air) at the office.

Lesson complete, we headed back to the house.

Steph opened windows to enjoy the breeze. I awoke from a nap, and the power came back on.
