Week of 20250608 - Ghana Week 65: Divinely Changed Plan; Temple Prep; Driving Experience; Nightly Medicine Call; Zone Conference; Fetching Water; Downside of English
= Sunday, we went to Mfuom after having planned yesterday to be elsewhere. I was needed to make a correction mid-ordinance, and Steph and I were asked to review things people should know for their first time in the temple. We covenant to strive to keep Heavenly Father's commandments; sincerely repent; exercise faith in Jesus Christ's atonement for us as we love God and love our neighbor; have sex only within marriage; and dedicate what God has blessed us with to building up Christ's church on earth, which includes ourselves and our families. God in turn promises us spiritual strength and protection to do these things.
= Monday, when leaving the office for the day, I brought a stove in from the truck - our reason for being in Mfuom yesterday - to tell the Office Elders that Mfuom didn’t need it. I learned we had been asked to bring the stove to Jukwa, not Mfuom. So because I absent-mindedly agreed to bring something to a place we hadn’t planned to go near and mis-remembered the request, we changed our plan from the day before and were present at our own branch when we were definitely needed. You can’t make this stuff up; no one would believe you.
= Tuesday, I rode with a new Assistant to the President as he drove in Ghana for the first time. I see the purpose of this exercise as helping him build confidence so he doesn't panic in a tight spot, and gently pointing out extra considerations when driving in Ghana [such as expecting people and vehicles to flow around you on *both* sides, in both directions]. I ride with the new driver, exuding confidence so he’ll feel confident, until he's ready.
= Steph has a nightly Zoom call to watch a missionary take medicine properly; Steph takes her own medicine while on the call.
= Wednesday, we prepared for zone conference, presented each day to a third of the mission for three days. In the evening, Steph popped up from a kneeling position on the floor without using her arms for support; good job [grin]!
= Thursday, we attended the first session of zone conference. We heard not just from young missionaries and the Morgans but also from President Morgan's counselors. At lunch, District President Davies (First Counselor) remarked that the Mfuom Branch had gone to the temple on Tuesday this week and he hoped they had had a refresher about the temple. I was pleased to be able to say that Steph and I had briefed them about the temple five days ago. [More of God keeping the big picture.] Steph gave a medical briefing.
= Friday, we attended the second session of zone conference. There were too many takeaways from these conference sessions to cover even a sliver of them here. Galatians 5:22 helps people recognize when they are feeling the spirit - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. Doctrine and Covenants 58:27-28 reminds us to not wait around to be told what to do - Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.
= In the evening, we considered where the mission vehicles might fit in our compound while the mission compound is being resurfaced. We watched Star Trek - Next Generation. We relaxed.
= Saturday, we attended the third session of zone conference. This was the Morgans' last time to address the mission. The Morgans learned more about each other on this mission and are grateful to have served a mission again. It’s all about choices. Do just one more thing. Over time, get more strength. Being yoked with the Lord makes your burdens light.
= In the evening, I drove Elders next door to the mission compound to fill the back of our truck with jugs of water for them to use. An Elder shared with me that it's frustrating to him to bring new friends to a Sacrament meeting where English is spoken; because, they only know Twi. I hadn't considered the downside of English in a meeting until that conversation.

to church
or: {For the sake of grace}
Seeing them on the main highway helps me appreciate my mother's reaction to seeing me on a similar highway on my large tricycle.
Construction tools: Bamboo will be used to hold the next story of a building while the cement dries; then the bamboo will be reused for the next project.
Imaginative motorbike front for the aboboyaa. I'm pretty sure I have seen this old church without a roof and that this replacement roof is new.
Steph lost her necklace next to the truck. It was still there when I went to hunt for it.
Steph helping prepare members to go to the temple

(The bike is blue and red, confusing the eye.)
Facial and skin care, hair cut, perming, braiding, washing
I think the motorcyclist has a small rider in front of him.
Four years ago, David Butler and Emily Freeman went on a field trip to Latter-Day Saint historic sites. Emily Freeman had to step away from Don't Miss This to accept the call to be the General Young Women's President. Her daughter, Grace, is David's co-host this year - see the previous photo - and they sometimes yield some of their time to replay portions of the trip.
This is the remote for our pre-pay electric meter. Ghana in general is rapidly moving to prepaid electric meters; no credit balance, no power.
Departing missionaries leave items behind for others to use. When I was asked whether a small suitcase was available, I took this photo to show the size and design of the suitcase to the person who asked for one.
The vehicle that tapped us over a year ago stressed the bumper, popping a sensor out of this hole. I had glued it back in and it stayed put until recently. [I later repeated the treatment successfully.]
I don't remember why he's doing this, but it made sense at the time.

Small shell macaroni, shredded carrots, shredded fake spam, sauces and brown sugar, and equal amounts of peanut butter and water: pasta in peanut sauce. It was so good that we ate almost all of it before I thought to take a photo.
This truck backed up (!) from near the Audit agency between us and the paved road. I had initially thought he was stuck, but this is near where he planned to drop his load.
We had hoped the gravel was for our ditch, but it's probably for the construction happening behind the building on the left in this photo.
We and others drive over the construction rubble, breaking it up. (That reminds me of Turks sweeping snow into the street for vehicles to break it is.)
If the audit agency had lined this drainage ditch lower, closer to the level of the road, water wouldn't collect here after a rainstorm. Maybe they're hoping for pavement someday (which would raise the road closer to the level of the ditch).
Probably {Thorny}
Zoomed in like this, it looks bad. But it's only paint damage from rain coming around the window at the back corner of the living room.
I've seen this on the back of many trucks, but it took me more than a year to realize that it says: "speed limit".
Zone leaders (2nd and 4th individuals in this photo) briefed their previous- and current- month progress (and goals; they set their own) as leaders and for the zone as a whole..
And then they respond to questions.
This activity reminds me of a course I took for my second Masters degree. This is amazing preparation for their future.
It says goals and actuals, but this slide is only actuals: baptisms by the mission as a whole compared to baptisms by the Mission Leadership Council.
Baptism opens the gate; then other members and leaders need to help these new converts.
District President Davies [President Morgan’s first counselor in the District Presidency] passed along advice from the previous mission president, President Morrison [who is now a counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency]: don't complain, don't comment, don't criticize.
[We don't often get to hear from President Davies at a Zone Conference, but this was the last round of conferences prior to the Morgans' departure.]

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
President Morgan joked with President Enchi, President Davies, and the District Clerk about callings causing one to lose one's hair..
Then Elder Nelson is flanked by then Elder Morgan and his missionary companion.
The Morgans are shown next to signs welcoming them here three years ago.
It's hand sanitizer, not Windex; it just looks like it.
The Campbells with their daughter, visiting.
A media award. Sisters Moriba and Benjamin, Twifo Praso Zone.
This will be nice. Missionaries will be able to upload photos demonstrating how to handle water, trash, etc. for their specific apartment.
For help with translation, turn first to members, then to GCCM Translators (mission compound guards who have served a mission and are willing to help with this when they can, then to some of our missionaries who are from Ghana.
A media award. Elders Shupe and Osarumwense, Nkanfoa Zone.
Matthew 18:4 - Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Ezekiel 37:19 - Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
[Can refer to the Book of Mormon, a record kept by Joseph's descendants, and the Bible, for which Judah's descendants provided the Old Testament; they testify of each other and are best used together.]
A media award: video by Elder Broulim, Hemang Zone. CH RCH isn't the same without U.

I'm reminded of President Morgan saying: Do you have a church? Good, go to church. If you're not going to church, come to ours.
.. of their own free will..
.. bring to pass much righteousness..
..
How to silence and re-enable your smoke alarm without breaking it..
How to use a manual pump to push water from a bucket through your kitchen sink filter to make it drinkable..
And how to clean the water filter nozzles.
Zone leaders gave banana bread awards for the cleanest apartment in each zone (bread supplied by Sister Morgan).
When I see this, I don't think of a credit line. I remember that we throw fewer roadblocks in our way (and have more lasting joy) when we seek to keep God's commandments; they exist for our benefit. The gospel has been restored. We're living the soft life in that regard.
Nyame Yɛ Ɔdomfo {God Is Gracious}
Glad we don't have to walk in the mud (except to get the compound gate open and closed).

The climax of the Haka..
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. -- Mark 16:15
Moroni 7:33 - And Christ hath said: If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me.
Elders Koroma and Musonye, Mankessim Zone.
Matthew 17:20 - And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
