Week of 20241117 - Ghana Week 36: Roof Squirrels; Rusty Cutlass; Financial Inspirations; The Dimmicks Are Here; Brother of Jared; Driving Test; Birthday; Spring Rolls

= Sunday, church was crowded. During scripture study, the Branch President asked me to explain an English phrase in the title of the lesson. To complete my explanation, I asked a member to read to us a specific scripture in Twi that contained the Twi equivalent of that phrase. I'm trying to encourage the group to read the scriptures if they can; they tend to discuss the manual without looking at the scriptures. Most thought it was fine that I had answered the question that way; the Sunday School President was unhappy that the verse was not in the first chapter to be reviewed, but that was the only verse with that phrase (and was the only verse read that day).
= At the house while I napped, Steph confirmed that we have squirrels between our ceiling and roof! She saw one come in and one come out (of a different hole), and she made a recording of the noise from multiple squirrels. She compared the noise to a family reunion with drunk uncles. [grin]
= While she was outside, she noticed a ripening plantain bunch and tried to use a rusty cutlass to remove leaves so she could prop up the heavy bunch to keep it from breaking the stem. While doing this and avoiding razor wire from the compound wall, she thought, “Mosquitoes and ants are everywhere. I’m going to die!”
= While she napped later, I worked on the Twi primer in the bedroom wmith the laptop on the ironing board to avoid turning on the living room light where she was on the couch.

= Monday, I spent too much time looking for clearer guidance regarding the requirement in Ghana for a business to withhold tax when it purchases something. (Yes, you read that right.) I thought I had an answer, then the Excel instances that I had open froze before I could make the payment request based on that answer. Eventually every instance closed normally *except the payment request*. That caused me to dig through the file cabinet for some history. And then I had a better answer. God is watching out for me.
= The Dimmicks had flown into Accra Friday but had to complete immigration-related tasks today before they could continue to the mission compound. They arrived in the late afternoon and we all had a nice meal and conversation at the Morgans. The Dimmicks are the new office couple; Elder Dimmick will soon replace me in the finance role. [whew!!] Sister Morgan will train Sister Dimmick to be the Mission Secretary.

= Tuesday, I recognized the difference between the brother of Jared and other prophets. In the scriptural record, Jesus approached Adam; Jesus approached Enoch; Jesus approached Noah and Moses and other prophets before Jesus came to earth. But the brother of Jared approached Jesus, initiating the contact.
= Elder Dimmick and I reconciled the working fund with President Morgan, who signed the check to refill the mission cash and MoMo [pay via phone] tomorrow. After Elder Dimmick left for the day, I finally managed to create credit card expense reports so the Morgans' cards wouldn't be locked out tomorrow. [another tender mercy] I had struggled with that for weeks until now.

= Wednesday, Elder Dimmick and I went to the bank, made deposits, and withdrew cash for the mission. Then I traded seats with him and had him drive to the office so I could confirm that he can navigate narrow spots and traffic without stress. (One of my roles is to certify that drivers new to the mission are up to the task.) After locking up the cash, we handled another financial errand and I watched Elder Dimmick do some more driving; he did fine.
= Home, Steph presented me with desserts and food she had bought from Me3; it was my birthday. We watched the entire first entire season of Lincoln Lawyer. We went to bed at 0300.

= Thursday, I was tired (understandably). I refilled imprest funds and worked on apartment leases. Steph and I bought KFC on the way home, which we ate while listening to Don't Miss This (scripture discussion).

= Friday, I convinced a remote office of the water company that we had indeed paid the bill for the apartment it had just cut off the water at. I told Elder Dimmick I’d pass him the finance phone on Monday and would then come into the office just when needed. [The full handoff took much longer.]
= Steph and I tried to eat at the stadium, but the restaurant only had one kind of meal available. So, we went to Pizzaman/ Chickenman/ Pinkberry and ate frozen yogurt (with toppings) while we waited to pick up pizza and noodles (filling but extremely spicy). Home, we watched Star Trek Enterprise episodes until midnight. We relaxed.

= Saturday, Sister Rebecca came over so Steph could learn to make spring rolls. They went out for better flour - we had only self-rising - and the result was some very nice food and some notes written by Steph on how to accomplish the task herself. I completed a blog episode by 8:30 PM (with brief naps). Then I selected scriptures in English and Twi for the themes in this week's scripture lesson. [That became important tomorrow; stay tuned!]

(The lectern is through a door opening two feet to her left: about as close as anyone can get.)

Nyame Oye {God Is Good}

Ewuradze Bɛhwɛ Wo {The Lord Will Take Care of You}

Self-assured

Trust and Obey

Ready to build the world

Steph's theory is that the paved road was covered with dirt to smooth it out. The dust in this short stretch supports her theory.

Each slab of wood is big enough to become a boat.

Abboyas are not just for cargo.

Women walk for miles.

Unusual name: R2 Joint

Football

Logical travel

Caring for each other

This went up within a week; we want to know how it will turn out.

Will the motorcycles yield - or swing into our lane?
(The goats moved.)

Women on the move

Road to where we park for church

More of that road

Of course, where we park our truck is not on the map.

Leaving church

Much lumber

Folks coming home from services

Another view of the new football pitch

Men carry too, just not as well as women do

White suit on a bicycle

Back through the dust

God is Love

Tuna-egg

Steph spotted me at my alternate office.

The Morgans, pointing out teaching areas in the mission

And with the help of the APs (Assistants to the President), which apartments will support which areas.

The Dimmicks: a lovely and talented couple

One reason we try to be home by dark when it's practical to do

Dress!

Plantains are not tiny

The ditch below our compound still poses a problem.

Yes, this is how to carry a sewing machine.

Valuable vegetables. We bought these at Shoprite; we would have to have spent a lot of time walking separate markets to find these locally. Notice how large the carrots are.

Steph bought me birthday treats.

We watched Don't Miss This.

View from the Cape Coast post office. (It's on the second floor.)

Steph waiting for us.

We drive at close quarters.

Onyame wɔ tumi o {God is powerful oh!}

Somebody went off the edge of the road.

They make it look easy.

Disappointing menu. The restaurant had none of these things.

[I have no idea what this means.]

Probably catching a tro

An occasional character on Star Trek Enterprise

From Pizzaman/Chickenman

Making spring rolls..

Sister Rebecca demonstrated; Steph took notes.

It does rain here, but never for very long.
