Week of 20240714 - Ghana Week 18: Low-key Wedding Anniversary Week

= Sunday, we rode with the Barilleaus - our truck was in the shop - to the Aubura chapel in Cape Coast; three Wards meet here at staggered times. Hymns and scriptures were in English, the rest mostly in Twi. We received the Sacrament and listened to talks. It was comfortable (overhead fans, open windows), we worshiped together, and we interacted with leaders and members before and after the service.
= It was the second Sunday of the month; so, the men went to Elders Quorum, the ladies to Relief Society. We discussed a recent Conference talk that centered around the actions of blind Bartimaeus, a man who cried out loudly (even when shushed by the crowd) for Jesus to have mercy on him and who cast off his beggar's coat with full confidence that Jesus would heal him. After church, the Barilleaus had us keep their truck for the night so we could get to the Monday morning meeting without interrupting their preparations for it.
= Home, Steph shredded five pounds of cheese to freeze it; we may not see any more for months. I made a vegetable-tomato sauce over pasta. I reviewed GPS coordinates for housing and the status of personal family history work being done by some missionaries. We had grilled cheese sandwiches before bed at 10:30.

= Monday after the meeting and a small celebration of Sister Morgan's birthday, I brought the boxes outside that would be used to secure cellphones during charging and wiped off dust and mold. Steph did medical stuff. Our separate talks (Steph with President and Sister Morgan, and mine with just the President) were early today. During my meeting, President Morgan put Brother Bright on the phone and we decided to leave the air conditioning on in the cargo container where these boxes are kept; we hoped that would retard mold growth until these boxes could be distributed to well-ventilated housing. Later, I measured cast-off pants from the container and labeled them with their waist size for missionaries who might want them.
= Our truck arrived after 4:30 and seemed to work OK. We picked up dunked wings at KFC for Steph. Home, we watched Don't Miss This (scripture discussion); we went to bed at 8 PM.

= Tuesday, we relaxed. Steph was not feeling good; so, we worked from home today. In the evening, we reviewed Twi.

= Wednesday, we had expected to go out for our fourteenth wedding anniversary, but Steph was not up to it. I made egg sandwiches, later pancakes from scratch. In the evening, we watched episodes of The Rookie.

= Thursday, we scaled back our anniversary plans and drove through Elmina (having to back out of a one-way street at one point) to Lemon Beach Restaurant, within sight of the ocean: 60s music, including "Surfin' U.S.A"; Hawaiian pizza and a seafood platter for two (ordered that size through my mistake: tilapia, calamari steaks, lobsters). After we ate, we walked a small portion of the breakwater. Heading back, we noted that the paths between the free-standing hotel rooms (styled as huts, but with air conditioning) were paved with small seashells dyed black!
= Returning, a Catholic church in Ola had the sign: Our Lady of Apostles (O.L.A.); I wondered whether Ola was named after the church. [Yes, it was, I learned much later.] We continued to downtown Cape Coast and it was my turn to have to back out of a one-way street. Home, we listened to the Sunday on Monday podcast and marked scriptures. I made chocolate cupcakes from scratch. Note to self: don’t serve cupcakes topped with chocolate frosting in bed [grin] - a real mess!

= Friday, We were at the Barilleaus shortly after 1000 to see wood carvings by an artist from Accra. We paid for the nativity figures we had ordered and bought a large wooden bowl that we’ll use as a charcuterie board. We then went to the office. Measuring tape in hand and referring to a size chart for men's shirts, I brought the white shirts left by previous missionaries into the office and marked each one with its size. We left early, did some shopping, and picked up supper from Me3. We watched The Rookie until 0230; we relaxed.

= Saturday, we didn't get calls or texts for help. So, we did minor housecleaning and I waded through photos for the blog.

To get to the Abura chapel, Elder Barilleau drove through the market instead of going around it.

Shredded cheese for the freezer

Necessity is the mother of invention.

The invention

And then there's downright insanity. (Kidding aside, this turned out well with rice and sauce.)

Birthday doughnut for Sister Morgan.

Tracking bicycle repair

The phone boxes quickly molded in the cargo container, and the lids of many of them warped so that they could not be closed.

I tried to make sense of the numbers but gave up.

That sounds like our advice to you.

Very unusual water tower. Most here are truncated cubes on stilts.

The road through Elmina to our destination this day was not direct.

Fufu pounding

After each pound, Mom moves the dough where the pounder will hit it. In this case, Mom is guiding the boy. Google some videos of the process. It's a wonder that people have the rhythm to do this without their hands being pounded.

I made cupcakes from scratch.
